Winning Mr. Smith

Dogs have all the luck in movies. Especially, in comedies.
Take the case of Mr. Smith in the movie "The Awful Truth" starring Irene Dunne and Cary Grant. Nice owners if you have to be owned.

The usual double crossings, misunderstandings and general witty barbs ensue but Mr. Smith might be the real star of the show. Irene and Cary lack children so when the divorce proceeding occurs, it is about who gets Mr. Smith.

Irene wins Mr. Smith over Cary by a dog toy in what has to be one of the most amusing court scenes ever filmed. Of course, Cary must try to get the last word by obtaining visitation rights of Mr. Smith which allows him to continue to spy on Irene. Of course, the the three stars are reunited by the end and Mr. Smith gets the final close-up of the movie.

Not a bad existence for a dog. In one picture he is battled over by Irene & Cary and the next picture he is Asta of the Thin Man movie fame. Yes, life is good for dog in Hollywood.
